Grade 316 L black is a low carbon version of 316 black that is resistant to sensitization (grain boundary carbide precipitation). As a result, it is extensively used in heavy gauge welded components (above 6mm). 

The higher content of grade 316 blackH allows it to be used at elevated temperatures, as does stabilized grade 316 blackTi. Even at cryogenic temperatures, these grades are tough due to their austenitic structure.
